A transient who was throwing chunks of concrete at police from the roof of a building in downtown Los Angeles was taken into custody early Monday morning, according to authorities.

Information relayed to KTLA by a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson indicates an officer originally put out an “officer needs help” call in the 800 block of South Broadway at 2:31 a.m.

That call was later changed to a request for backup, the spokesperson confirmed.

“A transient was throwing objects, including concrete, from the top of the building to the street at the officer,” the spokesperson elaborated. “The officer was not struck.”

Eventually, responding officers took the male transient into custody without incident, the spokesperson added.

Speaking to KTLA from the scene, LAPD Sgt. Jesus Salazar said that the man was throwing objects from the 10th floor of a high rise.

“Upon arrival, officers identified the suspect with the assistance of an airship overhead,” Salazar explained. “They contained the area, made the approach, and took the suspect into custody.”

In addition to the chunks of concrete, Sgt. Salazar said he believed the suspect also threw a fire extinguisher. He remarked that some squad cars received minor damage and that all officers who responded were okay.

“It was a dangerous [situation], so it was paramount for us to contain the scene,” Sgt. Salazar said.

Video from the scene shows officers speaking with the suspect in the back of a police car before taking him out and strapping him into a medical wheelchair.

Large chunks of concrete were also seen on the ground in the vicinity.

Nancy Fontan and KTLA photojournalist Dan Lunsford contributed to this report.
