Two teenagers were recently filmed kicking through the front door of a home in Valencia, an incident connected to a social media trend known as the “door kick challenge,” authorities say.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Santa Clarita Valley Station says its responded to multiple incidents related to this trend over the last few months.

Law enforcement warns that participation in the “door kick challenge” can result in felony vandalism charges and creates dangerous situations for everyone involved.

Agencies across Southern California and the country are also issuing warnings about the “door kick challenge.”

A primary concern, authorities say, is that individuals engaging in these pranks could face serious injury or death if a homeowner uses force to defend their property.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station issued a post on its Facebook page urging parents to speak with their children about the dangers.

“What may seem like a harmless prank for social media is actually a crime,” the LASD Facebook post reads. “It can result in felony vandalism charges and creates a dangerous situation for everyone involved.”

Deanna, a local parent, expressed concern about the trend.

“I would not want my kids to do that, but I can definitely say that if someone kicked our door in we would probably want to defend ourselves, so that’s a scary thought,” Deanna said.

Another parent, Haley Schlender, has also advised children to avoid the internet trend.

“I’ve told them not to because plenty of people have guns,” Schlender said,

The “door kick challenge” is not a new phenomenon. Last September, similar door-kicking cases were reported in Aliso Viejo, including one instance where a masked person completely smashed into an unoccupied home.
